Power Infrastructure Upgrade Announced for Guyana's Region Ten

The Guyanese government has announced plans to stabilise and expand the electricity supply in Kwakwani, Region Ten, with the immediate deployment of an 800 kVA generator. Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed the move, stating that it forms part of a wider effort to establish a reliable 24-hour power grid for the community as local energy demand continues to grow.

The generator is expected to be installed by mid-September 2026, raising the town's total power capacity from its current baseline of 2.3 MVA to 3.1 MVA. A further expansion is planned for January 2027, when an additional 1.0 MW is due to come online. Officials have not yet detailed the full cost of the works or named the contractors involved, though the timeline suggests the upgrades are being treated as a near-term priority rather than a long-range ambition.

Kwakwani has experienced intermittent power outages in recent years, a problem residents have raised repeatedly during community consultations. The current 2.3 MVA supply has struggled to meet demand during peak hours, particularly as small businesses and households have added appliances and equipment that draw more consistently on the grid. The planned increase to 3.1 MVA is intended to close that gap in the short term, while the 2027 expansion is aimed at accommodating further growth.

Local officials have indicated that the additional capacity should reduce the frequency of scheduled load-shedding, a practice that has periodically been used to manage strain on the existing network. Residents have previously described the disruption caused by unplanned outages, ranging from spoiled refrigerated food to interrupted work for those running small enterprises from home. A more consistent supply would also support the operation of schools, health facilities and other public services that depend on uninterrupted power to function normally.

Phillips shared the plans during a regional Cabinet Outreach held at Independence Square in Kwakwani, an event that also included engagements in the neighbouring community of Ituni. Cabinet Outreach sessions have become a recurring feature of the government's approach to rural policy, bringing ministers and officials directly to towns and villages to hear local concerns and present planned interventions. The Kwakwani and Ituni visit followed this format, with residents given the opportunity to raise questions about infrastructure, services and development priorities specific to Region Ten.

Region Ten, known as Upper Demerara-Berbice, has historically relied on bauxite mining and forestry, industries that have shaped both its economic base and its infrastructure needs. Power supply has long been a point of concern for communities outside Guyana's coastal belt, where the national grid is more developed and consistently maintained. The government's decision to prioritise Kwakwani's electricity network reflects an acknowledgement of this disparity, though it remains one of several regional infrastructure projects competing for resources and attention.

In his remarks, Phillips placed the Kwakwani project within the context of Guyana's broader economic trajectory. The country has recorded rapid growth in recent years, driven largely by offshore oil production, and the government has repeatedly framed this growth as an opportunity to fund improvements across all regions rather than concentrating investment along the coast. The administration has stated its intention to ensure that national revenues translate into tangible resource improvements for communities such as Kwakwani, which have not always benefited proportionately from the country's expanding economy.

Whether the September and 2027 targets are met on schedule will offer an early indication of how consistently that stated intention is being carried through into delivery. For Kwakwani, a stable and adequately sized power supply would represent a tangible, near-term change, one likely to be judged less by the scale of national economic figures than by whether the lights stay on through peak hours.
