A 1.5-megawatt portable generator has arrived at the Bosai power facility in Linden, Region 10, as authorities move to address a persistent electricity shortfall affecting the town and surrounding areas. Technical teams are currently installing transformer connections and fuel lines for the unit, with officials confirming that it is expected to be fully operational and feeding power into the grid by the middle of next week.
The deployment comes amid mounting pressure on Linden's electricity network. Consumption in the region has climbed to 15.1MW, against a current maximum generation capacity of approximately 14MW. That shortfall of roughly 1.1MW has left the grid unable to meet demand consistently, with the strain most acute during two periods each day. The first runs from 1pm to 3pm, and the second from 7pm to 9pm, when households and businesses draw power simultaneously and the system comes under its heaviest load.
Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar has outlined a wider strategy to stabilise supply in Linden, working alongside the regional electrification agency and private sector partners. Under the plan, a total of 3MW of additional generation capacity is to be added at the Bosai site, of which the newly arrived 1.5MW unit forms the first instalment.
Part of the approach has involved drawing on equipment already available within the mining sector rather than waiting for new generation assets to be procured from abroad. Three 1MW generators are being relocated from a manganese mining operation in Port Kaituma to Linden, a journey that requires significant logistical coordination given the distance and terrain separating the two locations. Officials view the arrangement as a practical way to bring idle capacity into use quickly, though the generators from Port Kaituma have yet to arrive and no firm date has been given for their installation.
While the physical expansion of capacity is under way, the authorities have also turned to demand-side measures to reduce the risk of outages in the interim. Heavy industrial consumers, including sawmill operators in the Linden area, have been asked to adjust their operating schedules so that high-energy processes fall outside the two peak windows. The request is voluntary rather than mandatory, and officials have acknowledged that compliance will depend on the willingness of individual businesses to absorb any disruption to their production schedules.
The scale of the appeal reflects how much of the current deficit is driven by a relatively small number of large consumers rather than domestic demand alone. Sawmills and similar operations draw substantial power for extended periods, and shifting even a portion of that load outside peak hours could ease pressure on the grid without requiring additional generation. Officials have not said whether the appeal will be reviewed or formalised should voluntary adjustment prove insufficient.
Once commissioned, the 1.5MW generator now installed at Bosai is expected to narrow the gap between supply and demand considerably, though it will not close it entirely on its own. Officials have indicated that the fuller resolution of Linden's power difficulties depends on the successful transfer and installation of the three Port Kaituma units, which together would bring the additional capacity close to the 3MW target set out in the government's agreement.
For residents and commercial operators in Linden, the immediate effect of the new unit is likely to be a reduction in the frequency and duration of outages during peak hours, particularly in the early afternoon and evening periods when strain on the system has been greatest. Whether that improvement proves durable will depend on the timeline for the remaining generators and on continued cooperation from industrial users during the interim period.
The Bosai facility remains the focal point of the government's response, and further updates on the commissioning timeline are expected as installation work progresses over the coming days.
