Mercado Pago, the financial services division of the e-commerce group MercadoLibre, has reported figures for the second quarter of 2026 that confirm its position as one of the largest digital finance platforms operating across Latin America. The results point to continued expansion in user numbers, lending and transaction volumes, built on the company's integration with its parent's retail marketplace.
Monthly active users rose 30 per cent year on year to reach 88 million, with the sharpest gains recorded in Mexico, where growth hit 45 per cent, and Brazil, where it reached 38 per cent. The company also reported strong customer satisfaction scores across its four largest markets: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
Beyond user growth, the platform is drawing a larger share of customers' financial activity. Total assets under management climbed 68 per cent year on year to $23.2 billion, while the average amount held per user increased 29 per cent to $264. That increase suggests customers are using Mercado Pago for savings and investment purposes rather than solely for payments.
Lending has expanded at a similarly rapid pace. The total credit portfolio grew 75 per cent year on year to $16.4 billion. Credit card balances accounted for much of that increase, rising 91.3 per cent to roughly $7.7 billion and now representing 47 per cent of total credit exposure, up from 43 per cent a year earlier. The company issued 2.6 million new credit cards during the quarter, a million more than in the same period last year.
Despite the scale of this expansion, asset quality has held steady. The ratio of loans between 15 and 90 days overdue has remained close to historic lows at around 7 per cent, a result that will be closely watched given the difficulties digital lenders in emerging markets have faced in balancing rapid credit growth with default risk.
Much of this performance stems from the structural link between MercadoLibre's retail marketplace and Mercado Pago's financial products. Internal data cited in the results shows that customers holding a Mercado Pago card are between two and three times more likely to remain active users of the wider MercadoLibre ecosystem, a pattern that reinforces customer retention across both businesses.
That retention has translated into transaction volumes. Total payment volume rose 56 per cent year on year to $101 billion, of which $64.1 billion came from acquiring activity. Growth in remunerated accounts and an expanding merchant network have contributed further to this trend.
The company's share performance has reflected this momentum. MercadoLibre's stock rose 22.7 per cent over the past three months, well ahead of the broader industry average of 5.9 per cent. That performance has come with a valuation premium. The stock trades at a forward twelve month price to earnings ratio of 39.01, compared with an industry average of 21.34. By comparison, Amazon trades at 22.76 and Sea Limited at 22.82, meaning MercadoLibre now commands a markedly higher multiple than either rival.
Analysts' forecasts suggest the growth trajectory is expected to continue, with sales projected to rise 44.6 per cent this financial year and a further 28.9 per cent the year after. Earnings per share are expected to remain broadly flat this year, down 0.7 per cent, before rebounding sharply by 43.3 per cent in the following fiscal year.
Taken together, the figures illustrate a business that has moved well beyond its origins as a payments processor for its own marketplace. Mercado Pago's growing credit book and asset management figures place it in more direct competition with regional banks, even as its valuation reflects investor expectations that this growth can be sustained without a corresponding rise in credit losses.
