The government has pledged a series of infrastructure and economic interventions for the fishing community of River View, Ruimveldt, in Georgetown, following an assessment visit by the President. The Agriculture Minister confirmed that work is already underway to address longstanding concerns raised by residents who depend on the fishing trade for their income.

The commitment follows a site visit during which the President examined conditions at the community's landing site and spoke directly with fisherfolk about the challenges they face. The Agriculture Minister has since taken charge of coordinating the response, describing the visit as the catalyst for a broader plan now being drawn up across several government departments.

At the centre of the plan is a proposed wharf to replace the existing landing site, which residents and officials alike have described as inadequate for the volume of activity it supports. Fishermen currently rely on a makeshift area with no formal structure for storing equipment or managing the movement of boats. The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority has been tasked with designing a proper facility to replace it.

Officials say the new wharf would give fishermen a secure space to store nets, hooks and other gear, reducing losses and damage that residents say have become routine under current conditions. It would also introduce a more organised system for launching and retrieving vessels, something the community has lacked for years despite the scale of fishing activity in the area.

Beyond the physical upgrade, the Agriculture Minister outlined a set of measures intended to support fisherfolk more directly. Chief among these is a commitment to help find markets for catches that have gone unsold, a problem several residents raised during the President's visit. The Minister said officials would work to connect fishermen with buyers on a more consistent basis, rather than leaving them to depend on informal or unreliable sales arrangements.

The government also plans to register fisherfolk in the area formally, creating a database of those whose livelihoods depend on the trade. Officials say this registry will help target future support more accurately and provide a clearer picture of how many households rely on fishing in River View.

One issue remains unresolved. Many residents applied for the fisherfolk cash grant introduced by the government, yet a number are still waiting for their payments to be processed. The Minister acknowledged the delay without giving a firm timeline for when outstanding disbursements would be completed, saying only that the matter was being followed up.

The government's assessment extended beyond fishing infrastructure to the broader living conditions in parts of River View. The Agriculture Minister described conditions in certain sections of the community as highly inadequate, citing the state of housing and surrounding infrastructure. Some residents, the Minister noted, have expressed openness to the idea of relocating to areas better suited for residential settlement, rather than remaining in a zone shaped primarily around fishing activity.

That acknowledgement has widened the scope of the government's response. The Agriculture Ministry will not be handling the intervention alone. The Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Public Works are expected to join the effort, with responsibility for addressing the residential and structural concerns that fall outside the Agriculture Ministry's direct remit.

Officials say the involvement of multiple ministries reflects the scale of the issues facing River View, which extend beyond fishing infrastructure into questions of housing quality and public works provision. Further details on timelines and funding for the wharf project, as well as the coordination between the three ministries, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

For now, residents have been told that design work on the new facility has begun, and that government representatives will continue engaging with the community as the plan develops.
