ExxonMobil Commits $100 Million to Overhaul Science and Maths Education in Guyana

ExxonMobil has launched a 10-year educational investment programme in Guyana backed by $100 million in funding, aimed at strengthening the country's capacity to train workers for its expanding technical sectors. The commitment centres on rebuilding science, technology, engineering and mathematics education from the ground up, beginning with a teacher-training scheme rather than direct student outreach.

The first phase of the programme, known as STELLAR (STEM Teacher Training: Enhancing Learning, Leadership and Academic Rigour), starts in August 2026. Sixty pre-service secondary school teachers will undergo specialised training at the Cyril Potter College of Education, Guyana's principal teacher-training institution. The two-year course will cover mathematics, the sciences, evidence-based teaching methods and classroom leadership, with the aim of producing educators equipped to deliver a stronger STEM curriculum in schools across the country.

A second cohort of teachers is due to enter the programme in August 2027, expanding its reach as the first group nears completion of their training. The staggered intake reflects an intention to build a steady pipeline of qualified science and maths teachers rather than a single, one-off cohort.

The rationale behind the programme rests on the premise that lasting improvements in student performance depend first on the quality of instruction available to them. Alvin Abraham, ExxonMobil's Global Manager of Corporate Giving, said the initiative was designed to help develop a new generation of local innovators and leaders, with the training of teachers positioned as the foundation for that outcome.

STELLAR forms the opening element of a larger undertaking called the Guyana STEM Initiative, which extends beyond teacher training to include direct opportunities for students and pathways into technical careers. The wider initiative reflects an approach that treats classroom instruction, hands-on learning and career development as connected stages in the same process, each intended to reinforce the others over the course of the decade.

Among the later components of the programme is the planned opening of a STEM Center in Georgetown, projected for 2029. The facility will be operated by the ExxonMobil Foundation Guyana and modelled on the company's existing Teen Engineering and Tech Centers, which operate in other parts of the world where ExxonMobil has a presence. These centres are designed to give young people access to laboratories, equipment and mentorship outside the standard school environment.

Where classroom teaching under STELLAR will focus on grounding students in scientific and mathematical theory, the Georgetown centre is intended to give them somewhere to apply that knowledge practically. Guyanese youth would gain access to immersive, hands-on learning environments intended to complement what they are taught in the classroom, rather than substitute for it. The three-year gap separating the start of teacher training and the opening of the centre suggests a sequencing in which the first trained teachers will already be active in schools by the time the physical facility becomes available to students.

Guyana's economy has undergone rapid change since oil production began off its coast in 2019, with the country now recording one of the highest rates of GDP growth in the world. That growth has increased demand for a technically skilled workforce capable of supporting energy, engineering and related industries, an area where the country's education system has historically been under-resourced.

Taken as a whole, the $100 million investment addresses two distinct but connected problems. It funds the training of professionals who will teach science and mathematics in Guyanese schools, and it funds the physical spaces in which students can later put that instruction into practice. The programme's ten-year timeline suggests the company is treating workforce development in Guyana as a long-term undertaking rather than a short-term commitment tied to any single project or contract.
