Berbice Expo opens in Region Six, with small businesses seeking partners and customers

The annual Berbice Expo and Trade Fair is due to open on the evening of 2 October at the Rose Hall Estate Community Ground in Region Six. Junior Basant, the Regional Chairman, described the event in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, which is the source of the information in this report. He said the fair will run for four days.

Mr Basant said the expo gives small and emerging businesses a platform to show their products, form partnerships and gain exposure. He called it one of the most anticipated events on the Region Six calendar. That description is his own, and no attendance figures or details of previous fairs were offered to support it.

He argued that the event lets small business owners meet larger and more established companies. "Expo creates a unique opportunity for small business owners in the region to partner with larger business owners," he said. In his view, these contacts help smaller firms promote themselves and widen their customer base. He added that entrepreneurs who do not normally have access to large markets or business networks can place their goods in front of thousands of potential customers and speak directly to others in the business community. He also said the exposure can help local goods and services gain recognition.

Businesses, entrepreneurs and patrons from Berbice and other parts of Guyana are expected to attend. Mr Basant said families come for leisure and for the deals that participating businesses offer. He said he expects businesses to have offers on sale over the coming days, and that residents will be able to enjoy the entertainment while exploring what is on show.

The regional chairman expects the fair to lift economic activity in Region Six. He said businesses in several sectors should benefit from the increased movement of visitors over the weekend. This is a forecast and not a result, and he did not put a figure on the expected boost.

Mr Basant urged residents to support the event and, in particular, the small and emerging businesses taking part. He said their growth is important to the continued economic development of the region.

The Guyana Chronicle's report is a preview built on a single interview. No exhibitor, organiser or visitor was quoted, so the benefits described are those the regional chairman expects and have not been confirmed by the businesses involved.

Several details were not given. The report did not say how many exhibitors will take part or what kinds of business they represent. It did not list the programme or entertainment, and it gave no ticket prices or opening hours. The organisers and funders of the event were not named. There was no information on how many small businesses are taking part, or on attendance and sales at earlier fairs.

The venue also needs checking. The report names the Rose Hall Estate Community Ground, but Mr Basant is quoted as referring to the Canje Ground, and the source does not explain the difference. The timing is also unclear. He spoke of events over this weekend and over the next four days, and four days from Friday 2 October would end on Monday 5 October. The closing date was not confirmed.

The expo is due to open on the evening of 2 October and, according to Mr Basant, will run for four days.
