The Guyanese government will shortly issue tenders for the upgrade of more than 30 airstrips across the country's remote interior, in what officials describe as one of the largest aviation infrastructure pushes in the nation's history. The rollout is intended to connect hinterland communities, many of which remain accessible only by air or by lengthy river and overland routes, to the wider national transport network on a more consistent, year-round basis.
The financial scale of the initiative is substantial. Officials have confirmed that $4 billion has been set aside from the 2026 national budget to fund the works. A central element of the plan involves replacing laterite surfaces, which degrade quickly during heavy rainfall and require frequent maintenance, with concrete. Airstrips built to this standard are expected to remain operational through wet seasons that have historically grounded flights and delayed cargo for days at a time.
Officials have pointed to the recently commissioned airstrip at Karasabai as evidence of what the programme can achieve. The facility, which now serves more than 1,200 residents, has been held up as a working example of the standard the government intends to replicate elsewhere. The next phase of construction will prioritise Mabaruma and Port Kaituma, along with wider stretches of Regions Seven and Eight, areas where residents have long depended on unreliable airstrips for essential travel and supplies.
The economic case for the programme rests largely on transport costs. Goods flown into hinterland communities currently carry a premium tied to the unpredictability of airstrip conditions, and passengers often face delays or cancellations when surfaces become unusable after rain. A more dependable network is expected to ease these costs over time, giving residents in isolated areas greater parity with those living along the coast.
Beyond commerce, officials have emphasised the role reliable airstrips play in healthcare and education. Medical evacuations from remote villages currently depend on weather conditions that can leave patients waiting for flights during emergencies. Concrete runways capable of withstanding heavy rain are expected to reduce these delays significantly. Teachers, textbooks and other educational materials, which are often flown into interior schools, should also move more predictably once the upgrades are complete. Officials have further suggested that improved access could open parts of the interior to tourism, an industry that has so far struggled to develop in areas where transport remains unreliable.
The announcement was made by Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo during his address to the National Toshaos Council Conference, a gathering of Indigenous village leaders held annually to discuss development priorities in Guyana's interior. Jagdeo used the platform to set out the scope of the coming tenders and to link the aviation programme to broader government commitments made at the conference.
Framed within the government's longer-term strategy, the $4 billion tender phase represents one part of a sustained effort to close the infrastructural gap between Guyana's coastal population centres and its interior regions. Successive administrations have described this divide as one of the country's most persistent development challenges, with hinterland communities often lagging behind in access to transport, healthcare and education. Officials have indicated that the current programme will not be the final phase, and that further investment in interior infrastructure is expected as the country's oil-funded budget continues to grow.
For now, attention turns to the tender process itself, and to how quickly contractors can begin work on runways that residents in some of Guyana's most isolated communities have waited years to see improved.
