Guyana has signed a formal agreement to host the CARIFTA Games for the first time in 2027, marking a significant moment for the country's sporting profile. The agreement was ratified between the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) and the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), confirming the country's position as host for the 54th edition of the games.

The event will take place over the Easter weekend of 2027 at the National Track and Field Facility on the West Coast of Demerara. The venue, already established as the country's principal athletics site, will undergo further preparation ahead of the games.

Organisers expect the event to draw approximately 1,100 athletes, coaches and sporting officials from across the region, making it one of the largest sporting gatherings Guyana has hosted. The scale of the undertaking has prompted early planning from local authorities and the AAG, who have started assembling and training the athletes who will represent Guyana on home soil. Officials say logistical work, including accommodation and transport arrangements for visiting delegations, is already under way.

The CARIFTA Games hold a distinct place in Caribbean athletics. For decades the competition has served as a proving ground for junior athletes moving through the ranks toward senior international competition, including the Olympic cycle. Many past competitors have gone on to represent their countries at world level, and the games are closely watched by university scouts from North America, who use the event to identify prospective talent. This dual role, as both a competitive stage and a recruitment platform, has helped sustain interest in the tournament well beyond the Caribbean.

NACAC leadership described the agreement with Guyana as an opportunity to strengthen domestic athletics programmes in the country. Officials from the association said hosting the games would give Guyanese athletes greater exposure to regional competition and help develop coaching and administrative capacity within the AAG.

The Guyanese government has pledged full logistical and financial backing for the games. Officials say this commitment forms part of a wider strategy, championed by the current presidential administration, to position Guyana as a hub for regional sporting events. The government has pointed to recent investment in athletics infrastructure as evidence of this ambition, and officials have suggested that successfully staging the CARIFTA Games could support future bids for other major tournaments. The expectation among planners is that a well organised event will demonstrate the country's readiness to host larger competitions in the years ahead, creating what several officials have referred to as a ripple effect for the national sporting calendar.

Guyana's path to hosting rights followed a period of uncertainty. The 2027 games had originally been assigned to other prospective host nations, which subsequently withdrew from their commitments. This left NACAC searching for a replacement host with enough lead time to prepare adequately for an event of this scale.

Guyana's emergence as the successor host followed direct intervention from the Head of State, working alongside CARICOM leadership to secure the transition. Regional officials have characterised the process as evidence of a coordinated effort among Caribbean states to keep the 2027 games on schedule despite the setbacks. The involvement of CARICOM in facilitating the handover reflects the broader importance member states place on maintaining continuity for the CARIFTA Games, given their role in developing young athletes across the region.

With the agreement now signed, attention turns to the practical work of preparing the National Track and Field Facility and the surrounding infrastructure for an influx of visiting teams. Officials in Guyana say further details on ticketing, accommodation partnerships and volunteer recruitment will be released in the coming months as planning progresses toward the Easter weekend fixture in 2027.
