Guyana launches pioneering STEM teacher training programme to modernise national curriculum

Guyana has officially launched STELLAR, a national programme designed to retrain STEM teachers across the country's schools. The initiative, whose name stands for STEM Teacher training, Enhancing Learning, Leadership and Academic Rigor, was developed jointly by the Cyril Potter College of Education and the Ministry of Education, with additional funding from corporate sponsors backing the rollout.

The programme's stated purpose is to change how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are taught in Guyanese classrooms, beginning with the teachers responsible for delivering that instruction. Organisers say the current approach to STEM education has relied too heavily on memorisation and textbook exercises, leaving many students disengaged before they reach the point where they might consider technical careers.

STELLAR culminates in an associate degree in STEM education, which its organisers describe as the first qualification of its kind offered anywhere in the Caribbean or the wider Southern Hemisphere. That distinction places Guyana in an unusual position among smaller economies, several of which have struggled to fund specialised teacher training at this level.

The timing is not incidental. Guyana's economy has undergone rapid transformation since oil production began off its coast, and government officials have repeatedly said that the education system needs to keep pace with that growth. Ministry representatives argue that a workforce capable of sustaining long-term development requires more than infrastructure spending; it requires an education system built to produce scientifically literate graduates.

The training itself marks a departure from conventional teacher preparation in Guyana. Rather than focusing primarily on content delivery, the curriculum incorporates digital tools into everyday lesson planning, alongside hands-on scientific experiments and problem-based approaches to mathematics. Teachers taking part in the programme are expected to leave with methods they can apply directly in the classroom rather than theoretical frameworks alone.

Officials involved in the programme's design say the intention is to make STEM subjects feel less abstract to students. Lessons built around experimentation and applied problem-solving, they argue, tend to hold pupils' attention longer than lecture-based instruction, and may help identify students with an aptitude for technical fields earlier in their schooling. Whether that translates into higher uptake of STEM careers in Guyana remains to be seen, though the ministry has framed the programme as a long-term investment rather than one expected to show immediate results.

Speaking at the launch, education officials described the country's oil wealth as an opportunity rather than a solution in itself. The government has continued to invest in new school buildings and expanded access to schooling in rural areas, but ministry figures were candid in stating that physical expansion alone will not determine Guyana's competitiveness on the world stage. That, they said, will depend on the calibre of instruction students receive once those buildings are in use. The remarks reflected a broader argument within government that national development cannot rest indefinitely on natural resource revenue, and that intellectual capacity built through education will ultimately matter more for the country's standing internationally.

More than 60 teachers make up the first cohort to begin the STELLAR programme, having formally started their coursework at Cyril Potter College of Education. Their training will run alongside their existing teaching responsibilities in many cases, requiring them to apply what they learn in real classrooms as the programme progresses rather than waiting until graduation.

The expectation placed on this first group extends beyond their own qualification. Officials have described the cohort as the mechanism through which the new curriculum will reach schools nationally, with each teacher expected to carry the revised methods into their own classrooms and, over time, influence how colleagues approach STEM instruction. Whether STELLAR achieves the broader shift in educational outcomes that its designers envisage will depend largely on how well that transfer takes place over the coming academic years.
